Make a difference in a child's life... become a substitute!

The Substitute Program is committed to providing coverage due to absences of both a personal and professional nature. We ask that District employees promptly notify SAM of a projected absence as soon as a Supervising Administrator grants approval or the employee is aware of the absence. Early notification will enhance our ability to assign a substitute to the assignment. It will also greatly assist fellow employees by allowing them to continue their work without the burden of providing additional coverage.

Follow these guidelines whenever possible:

  • Report all absences by calling the SAM system at 226-3900 or log in to the SAM Web Center.
  • Personal and Professional Day absences should be reported as soon as possible but at least 48 hours prior to the date of absence.
  • In-district Professional Days may not be scheduled on Monday or Friday unless approval is granted by the Director of Human Capital.

Here are some helpful hints to remember when reporting absences:

  • Same-day absences should be reported prior to 6:00 a.m. on the date of the absence to enable us to arrange for a substitute.
  • Half-day absences can be difficult to cover, especially on high usage days. Check the Professional Leave Calendar to plan your appointments and personal days.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Un-licensed persons cannot substitute for teachers in the classroom even if they are paraprofessionals in your building.
